The Plus - Third-Party Assessment

Carbon Plus

The basis for our offsets are centered on CO2 Storage Assessments, with one metric tonne CO2eq being equivalent to one Carbon Plus Credit. The assessments are completed for us by third party firms and matched to the particular conditions in our area, including climate.

The graph below shows the results of the assessment that was completed for three different boreal species grown in the specific soil conditions we expect to be planting in. As you can see in the graph, each tree species has its own unique carbon storage potential over time. If one of our new forests has a unique set of conditions, we will also have it assessed independently to ensure accuracy.

The Carbon Farmer Inc. has chosen to underestimate the carbon storage of our forests by taking the assessment total and converting only 90 percent of that assessed amount into Carbon Plus Credits. For example, our first forest consisting of lodgepole pine has been assessed to store 241 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) per acre over the course of its 60 year management period. We will only be selling 217 Carbon Plus Credits per acre from this forest, or 90 percent of the 241 tonnes it has been assessed to store. That way if our assessment is slightly off, we will not have sold more Carbon Plus Credits than we have actually produced. It is just another way we hope to assure Our Offsetters that we are continually striving to provide a sound way to make a positive impact on our environment.

The CO2 Storage Assessment depicted above was completed by a third party firm, Woodrising Consulting Inc., which is a Canadian environmental consulting company. Woodrising Consulting Inc. has developed expertise specifically in the areas of carbon sequestration from land use, land-use change and forestry activities, and landfill gas generation and capture. Since 1993, they have worked on projects in Africa (Kenya and Uganda), Latin America (specifically Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, and Peru) and Canada.
